"An Unlikely Canvas" Coming Soon on Judge Mathis

Hakeem_A-web-18.jpg 2024-03-20 21:31:13

I got cast in a speaking role to be a litigant on Judge Mathis. I was teamed up with a scene partner to improvise based on character biography which included a short self-description of the character as well as the case details.

I was playing a defendant named Kyle Foley who was being sued by his brother-in-law for $600, and I was counter-suing for $240. I was ready to have a lot of fun with it.

This was filmed at Entertainment Studios Television for Allen Media Group (AMG) and run by Standing Room Only (SRO).

We prepared for about 3 to 4 hours with the producers who were really amazing (Greta and Raul), and a few other fantastic folks. My scene partner was talking a big game and seemed pretty confident the whole time. We even got some last minute coaching right before filming and then entered the courtroom set.

Inside we saw Judge Mathis, the Bailiff who is his son, and the other extras who were in the viewers seat as audience. I've done audience work a few times before. It is a fun and easy way to earn some lunch money.

For the speaking role on Judge Mathis, I was really prepared, and was given a lot of praise from production. I knew every part of the whole case and even pointed out a small error to the writer who was grateful I was so detail oriented.

Unfortunately, when the cameras finally started rolling, my scene partner totally folded and threw away his case. Judge Mathis wasn't having any of it and quickly awarded the case to me.

I even tried to save my scene partner by partly defending him to give him time to regain his nerves so we could put on a great show, but he completely threw himself under the bus. I was a bit disappointed, but glad I got to do it and get a nice little bit of footage for my reel.

In retrospect, I might have done more, but my scene partner really wasn't in for it. Too bad, since actors, or wannabes only get one shot at the litigant speaking role on many of these court shows. If you ever get a chance, I suggest over-preparing - if there is such a thing.

One thing I can say is that the quick knock-out of my scene partner is in part due to my experience and understanding of extensive preparation as a boxer and martial artist - even on short notice.

All in all, I'm proud of how confident I was due to my preparation which only took a few hours. I simply read the details, made a recording of my part to listen to repeatedly, and used my imagination to visualize the scenario.

Right now I have another speaking role booked to play a vampire in a comedy, tonight I am going to be dancing in a series (which I am getting an IMDB credit for!!!), and last night I totally killed it on-stage at The Fourth Wall in Little Armenia for my 1st ever tight-five, stand-up comedy improv at their open mic.

I'm going to keep flowing with this momentum, and am very thankful to be a working actor in Hollywood after only being here for 2-weeks. Stay encouraged! Also check out my BackStage Profile
